# Neuroprotect: protected mode


_Protected mode_ is a mode that [the Yandex Browser beta version](https://browser.yandex.com/beta/) enables on bank and payment system pages to make electronic payments more secure. In protected mode, Yandex Browser activates [strict verification of certificates](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/safe-mode.md#sertificates). If the certificate is verified, Yandex Browser [disables extensions](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/safe-mode.md#extensions#extensions), and [its interface is modified](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/safe-mode.md#switch-on). Protected mode is part of [Neuroprotect](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/protection.md), which is an integrated security system.

## Check certificates {#sertificates}

In protected mode, Yandex Browser enables strict verification of [HTTPS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP) certificates. Protected mode is not enabled if:

- There are [problems with a certificate](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/untrusted-sertificates.md#others), for example, a bank certificate is expired, invalid, or not trusted.
- An [unknown certificate](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/untrusted-sertificates.md#unknown) installed to your operating system by a program or the network administrator is used.
- A [certificate installed by a special program](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/untrusted-sertificates.md#antivirus) is used.

If protected mode has not been enabled, it is unsafe to make electronic payments and we do not recommend doing this.

## Disabling extensions {#extensions}

In the protected mode, Yandex Browser disables all extensions except password managers verified by Yandex. This is to prevent [malicious extensions](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/security/check-extensions.md#bad-extensions) from stealing or tampering with your payment information.

The extensions are re-enabled when you exit protected mode.


## Enabling the mode {#switch-on}

 Protected mode is enabled by default when payment pages are open. When this happens, the upper panel and [tabs](https://yandex.by/support/browser-beta/en/navigation/about.md) of Yandex Browser turn dark gray, and the name of the mode and the ![](../_image/safe-mode-icon.svg) icon appear in the [SmartBox](*smart-link).

If you have opened an online payment page and don’t see changes in the interface, enable protected mode manually.

## Disabling the mode {#switch-off}

  If you have enabled protected mode on a page by mistake, disable it:

  1. In the [SmartBox](*smart-link), tap ![](../_image/safe-mode-icon.svg).
  1. Disable the **Protected mode** option.

- On all websites


  To fully disable protected mode:

  1. In the upper-right corner, click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)**&nbsp;→ **Settings**.

  1. Go to the **Security** tab at the top of the page.
  1. In the **Threat security** section, deselect the **Open online banking and payment system sites in Protected mode** option.
